An outlaw recently released from jail is on his way back to the town he had once terrorized. His gang has reassembled, waiting for him to arrive on the noon train. Will the townspeople band together to resist? Will the marshal, recently retired and scheduled to leave town that very day, resume his duties or keep to his plans to depart? If the marshal stays, who will back him?
This film teaches the meaning of courage, loyalty, leadership, and the responsibilities of friends and married couples to each other. By showing an example of a man who stood up to outlaws, the film criticizes those who gave the names of people with left-wing political views to the McCarthyites and the House Un-American Activities Committee during the Red Scare of the late 1940s and early 1950s. The film is an allegory about the craven behavior of many people in that period and the courage needed to stop McCarthyite excesses. High Noon is one of the few Hollywood movies in which filmmakers, fearing government persecution, disguised the political implications of their movie.

To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below a paragraph from the Learning Guide to High Noon.
In most Westerns, the hero takes out the bad guys without fear and without doubting himself. High Noon is not the normal Western. Will Kane admits to being afraid and his course of action is constantly questioned by his wife, his associates, and his friends. High Noon is a study in character rather than a mere action adventure set in the Wild West.
The Learning Guide to High Noon also contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
A subscription to TeachWithMovies.com will give teachers access to 285 Learning Guides from which they can easily create lesson plans. Click here to subscribe and learn about the hidden meaning of High Noon.
