Benefits: The Longest Day is a valuable introduction to the
Normandy Invasion, showing its scope, the confusion on the German
side, and the gritty fighting and lucky breaks that permitted the
Allies to prevail. Although this film does not fully describe the
pain, mutilation, and death involved in war, we recommend it rather
than films such as Saving Private Ryan. Children ages 15 and below
do not need to see the
horrors of war in gory detail. There is a substantial
risk of causing them emotional injury. There is no harm in having children wait
to see such scenes until they are older.
