The Longest Day

To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below the Benefits section of the Learning Guide to The Longest Day.

Benefits: The Longest Day is a valuable introduction to the Normandy Invasion, showing its scope, the confusion on the German side, and the gritty fighting and lucky breaks that permitted the Allies to prevail. Although this film does not fully describe the pain, mutilation, and death involved in war, we recommend it rather than films such as Saving Private Ryan. Children ages 15 and below do not need to see the horrors of war in gory detail. There is a substantial risk of causing them emotional injury. There is no harm in having children wait to see such scenes until they are older.

The Learning Guide to The Longest Day also contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
