Lesson Plan on Predicting Combinations for Alleles
in a Zygote Using Punnett Squares

This lesson plan demonstrates how to use a Punnett Square to predict combinations for alleles in a fertilized egg (zygote) from the genetic makeup of the parents. The lesson plan contains diagrams of Punnett Squares and illustrates their use for predicting sex linked X chromosome genetic defects such as red-green color blindness and the genetic defect involved in Adrenoleukodstrophy (ALD). (This was the illness suffered by Lorenzo Odone whose saga is described in the movie Lorenzo's Oil.)

A comprehension test with an answer key and a list of the curriculum standards for the ten most populous states that are satisfied by the lesson plan are also provided. The lesson plan is suitable for Biology classes in grades 8 - 12.

TeachWithMovies.com offers more than 350 Learning Guides based on movies. The site also contains a few free standing lesson plans, such as this "Lesson Plan on Predicting Combinations for Alleles in a Zygote Using Punnett Squares".

Learning Guide Excerpt

To give teachers and parents an idea of what the lesson plan contains we have set out a brief excerpt from the lesson plan.

Sex chromosomes operate a little differently from autosomal chromosomes. There are two different sex chromosomes, X and Y. Women have two X chromosomes and men have an X and a Y. The sex of the child depends on whether the father's sperm contains an X chromosome or a Y chromosome. If the father provides an X chromosome to the zygote (fertilized egg), the child will be a girl. If the father contributes a Y chromosome, the child will be a boy. In other words, female sex chromosome pairs are XX and male sex chromosome pairs are XY. Since any one of the mother's egg cells will have only one of her X chromosomes, and the father's sperm cells will have either his X or his Y chromosome, the possible pairings are:
XM1XF1       XM1Y        XM2XF1        XM2Y

Most Learning Guides contain sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
