To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below a paragraph from the Learning Guide to Roots Vol. IV.
Slave families were often disrupted and
family members sold to distant plantations. This practice was so common that the marriage vows of
slaves were modified. The traditional words "til death to
us part" were changes to the words "til death or distance do
us part." As Roots shows, "enlightened" slave holders tried to
keep families together but would split them up without
compunction if a slave ran away or was disruptive to the
plantation.
The Learning Guide to Roots Vol. IV contains sections Benefits of the movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
