Among other defects, it trivializes personal interactions, shows a child, in effect, being rewarded for lying to his parents, and is devoid of respect for some types of animal life. However, many teachers do show this film. The TWM Learning Guide to the movie will help teachers recognize and neutralize its defects and achieve some benefit for children from the movie.

Learning Guide Excerpt

To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below a paragraph from the Learning Guide to Where the Red Fern Grows.

If a teacher or parent is going to allow a child to watch Where the Red Fern Grows, it should only be after the child has read the novel and the TWM Learning Guide to the movie can help make up for some of the deficiencies in the movie. Below is the Quick Discussion question from the Guide.

QUICK DISCUSSION QUESTION: One difference between the novel and the film deals with the result of the competition. In the novel, Billy wins outright, yet in the film he is given the trophy by the true winner out of respect. What may the screenwriters want the viewers to see in this shift from the novel?

Suggested Response: The screenwriters are trying to emphasize values. They show Billy having lost the championship because he took time out to rescue his grandfather, thus illustrating the value of family over victory. The actual winner of the competition shows not only respect but generosity and a sense of fair play.

The Learning Guide to the film Where the Red Fern Grows contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading.
