Age: 14+; Rated R for depiction of violent political repression; Drama; 1995; 100 minutes; Color.

This film was inspired by the sad and continuing history of political repression in Myanmar (formerly Burma). It tells the fictional story of Dr. Laura Bowman, an American who travels to Myanmar as a tourist, seeking to forget a tragedy at home. Confronted with the searing brutality of the ruling military dictatorship, she is transformed by the suffering of the Burmese people and the inspiring leadership of Nobel Peace Prize Winner Aung San Suu Kyi. To this day, Aung San Suu Kyi and the movement she heads still seek democracy and a government that recognizes basic human rights.

The TeachWithMovies.com Learning Guide to Beyond Rangoon will help teachers and parents discuss the important and beneficial themes of this movie, describe where historical truth ends and fiction begins, and provide background information about Aung San Suu Kyi and the repressive military dictatorship she opposes. The Learning Guide also suggests questions that will prompt discussions on the issues raised by the film.

Myanmar

To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below the Benefits section of the Learning Guide to Beyond Rangoon.

Benefits: Beyond Rangoon allows the viewer to experience a conflict that is unknown to most of the world. Because the Myanmar military has imposed a virtual news blackout on the country, few images of its brutal repression have reached the international media. Having an outsider "witness" the atrocities helps non-Burmese relate to this far away conflict. But this film is not solely devoted to human rights abuses in Myanmar. It also shows how a person can overcome a devastating tragedy and become involved in life again.

The Learning Guide to Beyond Rangoon also contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.

A subscription to TeachWithMovies.com will give teachers access to 285 Learning Guides from which they can easily create lesson plans. Click here to subscribe and learn about the continuing story of human rights violations and oppression in Myanmar through Beyond Rangoon.
