Learning Guide Excerpt

To demonstrate how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers to improve lesson plans, we have set out below a paragraph from the Learning Guide to Midway.

In the first engagements of the battle, on June 4, 1942, the American attacks on the Japanese ships were amateurish, ineffective, and unsuccessful. In these early attacks, a very high percentage of the American planes were shot down and their pilots lost. Then, at about 10:00 a.m., the Japanese dropped their guard for a moment and within five minutes, two squadrons of U.S. dive bombers, which were in the right place at the right time, destroyed three Japanese aircraft carriers, the backbone of the vaunted Japanese First Air Fleet. Another carrier was sunk later in the day. In short, a few American dive bombers changed the course of the war.

The Learning Guide to the film Midway contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
