    Lessons for Turning Pop Culture Books and Films into Opportunities for Learning

    Young people all over the country are reading voraciously, not the assigned books in their English classes, but the ones their friends have advised them to pull up on their tablets. These reading choices can help students comprehend meaning, interpret character and analyze theme, to supplement and enrich reading for pleasure.

    All lessons are home-based and do not require that class time be used for viewing the films. Free reading sessions, should they be a part of the reading-for-pleasure class routine, may be utilized for students to develop the habit of discontinuous reading: at dentists offices, bus stops, . . . any quiet moments between scheduled events.

    It is important however, that the writing assignments be done in the classroom, timed and under the watchful eye of the teacher.

    The following Learning Guides present the possibilities for growth in English Language Arts in three series of books: Twilight, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

    Instructions for Teachers

    Present the students the following worksheet before they begin to read the novel or see the films. Tell students that they are to write answers to the questions in complete sentences and to offer support for each assertion they make. They will be asked to use the information on these worksheets for a formal essay when they have finished reading the book and viewing the film. Note: Students enjoy reading the books more than once and a student interested in gaining credit for this assignment may be allowed to read the book again and to answer the questions based upon the most recent reading.

    Worksheet for Twilight
    * Do these instructions work? ** Complete the assignment by answering each question in paragraph form. Answers need to be complete and comprehensive, demonstrating that you paid attention to the film and thought about what was shown on the screen. You may use more than one paragraph if necessary. Be sure that the topic sentence of your first paragraph uses key words from the question. All responses should be in complete sentences using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.
    1. Title of book, author, publisher, and publication date.

    2. Describe the location and time period in which the story is set and the length of time passes before the story ends. Include details about the town of Forks and specific places where important scenes occur as well as evidence about the time period and the passage of time.

    3. Characterize Bella, Edward and James. Give details that show what each individual is like in terms of physical appearance, thoughts, emotions, motivations and intentions.

    4. Explain the central conflict in the story.

    5. What happens in the story that can be called a turning point, leading you to understand more about each character and hinting at what will come?

    6. What in the resolution leads you to believe that there will be a sequel to the story? Defend your opinion with direct reference to the book and explain what more you want from the story.

    7. What aspects of the book kept you interested? Explain whether you were interested in the characters, the tension in the conflict, ideas about vampires, etc.

    Instructions from the Film Study Worksheet – which do we want to retain?*

    Read the questions before you watch the film so that you will know what to look for while you watch. At breaks during the showing or at the film's end, you will have an opportunity to make short notes in the spaces provided. If you make notes while the film is playing, make sure that your note taking doesn't interfere with carefully watching the film. You do not need to make any notes on the worksheet but after the film is over you will be required to fully respond to the questions.

    Complete the assignment by answering each question in paragraph form.     2. What are the differences between the book and the film in the presentation of the episodes involving the prom? What is the effect on the viewer of the film in terms of these differences? Be sure to back up your opinion.

    3. What are the differences between the book and the film in the presentation of the episode in which Bella is saved from Tyler's van? Are the differences significant enough to shift your thinking about the event? Be sure to justify your opinion.

    4. Do you feel the same way about James as he is shown in the film as opposed to the book? Cite support for your opinion.

    5. In what way is the ending of the film more satisfying or less satisfying than the ending of the book? Refer to both book and film as you justify your answer to this question.

    Prompts for Essays to be Written for Students to Earn Class Credit for the Book/Film Experience
    Note: Teachers can collect, evaluate and give credit for the completed worksheets as well as the final essays, which should be evaluated using the rubric to which the students have become accustomed.
    1. Write a formal opinion essay in which you determine whether the book or the film is better in terms of characterization, presentation of conflict, and the ability of the writer and/or director to communicate theme in the resolution to the conflict. Back up your opinion with direct reference to both book and film. Be sure to offer counter-argument in order to strengthen your opinion against those who would disagree.

    2. Write a formal analytical essay on the ability of the director of the film to communicate the substance of the written work. Consider entertainment as well as art in the filmmaker's efforts to remain true to the story as written by the novelist.

    3. What changes would you make in the film to better communicate the story and its themes? Consider adding left out events or episodes, conversations or characters that may have been eliminated in order to film the story in 122 minutes. Back up your suggestions for change with sound reasoning.

    6. What in the story can be called a turning point in that it leads to resolution of the conflict?

    7. What in the resolution leads you to believe that there will be a sequel to the story? Defend your opinion with direct reference to the book and explain what more you want from the story.

    8. What aspects of the book kept you interested? Explain whether you were interested in the changes in characters and the introduction of new characters, tension in the conflict, more ideas about vampires, werewolves etc.

    Note: Teachers can collect, evaluate and give credit for the completed worksheets as well as the final essays, which should be evaluated using the rubric to which the students have become accustomed. The first two prompts are addressed to students who have seen both New Moon and Twilight.
    1. Write an essay in which you compare the books to the films in terms of their abilities to provide transition between the first and the second in the series. Consider both foreshadowing and echoing in your comparisons and provide specific examples.

    2. Complications in the second book and film remain problems as new complications are introduced. Write an essay in which you list the three most important complications that can be seen in the first of the series and which continue in the second. Specify any new complications that come into play in the second in the series and comment on whether or not you expect these complications to be a part of the third installment of the Twilight Saga.

    3. Write a formal opinion essay in which you determine whether the book or the film is better in terms of characterization, presentation of conflict, and the ability of the writer and/or director to communicate theme. Back up your opinion with direct reference to both book and film. Be sure to offer counter-argument in order to strengthen your opinion against those who would disagree.

    Prompts for Essays to be Written for Students to Earn Class Credit for the Book/Film Experience
    The first two prompts are directed at students who have read all three books and viewed all three films. 1. Write an essay in which you look at the shift in feelings experienced by Bella from the first, into the second and finally in the third book and evaluate how well these shifts are presented in the film. Note any differences you may see between the film and the book in this regard.

    2. Write an opinion essay in which you assert your belief about the power of romantic love over friendship, a theme found in the third of the Twilight Saga. Back up your opinion with direct reference to the films and comment about the references you cite. Note any differences you may see between the film and the book in this regard.

    3. Write a formal opinion essay in which you determine whether the book or the film is better in terms of characterization, presentation of conflict, and the ability of the writer and/or director to communicate the resolution to the conflict. Back up your opinion with direct reference to both book and film. Be sure to offer counter-argument in order to strengthen your opinion against those who would disagree.

    4. Write a formal critique of the books and films you have seen so far in terms of content and artistry. Consider both the importance of the themes presented as well as the entertainment value of the written and screened versions of the story.

    5. The action in this film is far greater than in the preceding two films. Write an essay in which you show how increased action helps sustain interest and propels the story forward without diminishing the romance/fantasy element of the series.

    1. Since the book is written in three perspectives, how do the films deliver the important facts and feelings you get from reading the three separate points of view that are in the book?

    2. Changes in characters lead to new complications and ultimately to resolution. Explain what has changed in Bella, Edward and Jacob that enables each of them to be happy at the story's end?

    3. What occurs in the film that tells you there are to be no more sequels?

    4. How satisfied are you in terms of what happens to Bella, Edward, Jacob, and Renesmee?

    5. Specifically, what personal characteristics enabled Bella, Edward and Jacob to resolve their problems and be able to look forward to good lives? Consider psychological states rather than images and shields.
    Final Prompts for Essays to be Written for Students to Earn Class Credit for the Book/Film Experience
    Note: These final prompts assume that students have read all four books and seen all five films.
    1. Research Internet sources and write an expository essay in which you explain how the book's author came up with each subsequent book, what screen writers had to do in order to put the story into film, and how critics and the public received the books and the films. Conclude your essay with the amount of money spent and made in the production of both written and screened versions of the Twilight series.

    2. Prepare a Power Point presentation that would enable your classmates to understand the storyline as it moves through all four books and all five films. Keep your efforts focused on the main issues in the series and avoid an overly long and detailed presentation.

    3. Review critical sources and write an essay in which you present the problems many book and film critics see in terms of both art and story. Specify awards or honors granted to the books and films. Conclude your essay with a look at the public's response to the books and films; include the amount of money earned in both media. Specify any on-going interest, such as fan groups, conventions, etc, that keep the popularity of the series in the public consciousness.

    4. Write an opinion essay in which you determine whether the series of books and films is character driven or story driven. You will need to defend your point of view with direct reference to action, dialogue and themes. Be sure to include counter arguments in order to strengthen your point of view.

    5. Create a story board to share with your class that would reveal what is happening in the lives of Bella, Edward, Jacob and Renesmere any number of years into the future. Consider what changes may occur in the characters or their circumstances over time.
