Uncle Tom's Cabin    (1987) No MPAA Rating; Director: Stan Lathan.    "There are several versions of this film and I have found the version with Phylicia Rashaad and Samuel L. Jackson to be the best and most appropriate version. This movie does a good job showing the conflicts presented by Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. It allows students to see not only the message contained in the novel, but how this novel impacted the sectionalism and divisiveness of the country during the pre-Civil War era. The movie alone creates a lot of discussion and questions by the students, and lends itself quite well to an introduction of the causes of the Civil War." Melissa McDonald, Teacher, Spring Lake, NC. Suggested grades: 11-12. [LI]

Under The Influence    (1986) No MPAA Rating; Director: Thomas Carter.    See the section on this movie in The Motion Picture Prescription.
