Evolution — Using H. G. Wells' "The Time Machine"

Subject: Science/Biology; Science-fiction.

Ages: 13+: Middle School and High School Level

Length: Snippet: 9 minutes (in three segments); Lesson: Two 45 - 55 minute class periods. Homework: short essay between the two class periods.

Excerpts from the Complete Snippet Lesson Plan

Learner Outcomes/Objectives: Students will learn about the timescale of evolution through the fictional evolution of humankind 800,000 years into the future into different sub-species that live in a complex relationship of predation and reproduction. They will also be introduced to the mechanisms that drive evolution, namely mutations and natural selection, through examples of some dramatic mutations such as the Blue Moon butterfly and relatively recent mutations in the human species such as the ability of adults to digest dairy products and the appearance of blue eyes. Students will discuss the idea that human evolution has come to a halt, held by many researchers and currently under debate. They will also be introduced to the concept of genetic engineering.

Rationale: Selected clips from movie "The Time Machine" will add interest and variety to the study of evolution.

Description of the Snippet: [The complete Snippet Lesson Plan identifies three clips from the movie, running 9 minutes total, which will allow teachers to dramatically introduce important concepts in the Theory of Evolution.]

Helpful Background: [This section in the complete lesson plan provides information to impart to the class.]

USING THE FILM CLIPS IN THE CLASSROOM

Preparation

[The complete Lesson Plan provides step by step instructions on what to do to prepare for the class and how to give the lesson plan. The first instruction is set out below and serves as a formative assessment.]

1. Ask students what they understand by "evolution." During the ensuing discussion it will probably become clear that most students associate evolution with very long timescales. On the board or on a sheet of paper make a note of any other features related to evolution that come up during the discussion, especially those related to mutations, natural selection, and genes. Discuss these if there is time at the end of the lesson.

[The complete Snippet Lesson Plan describes additional steps in the lesson, including discussion questions, class activities, and a homework assignment.]
